All are welcome!
Sitting Zazen with Us
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Henry David Thoreau Sangha (“Hank”) meets every Monday night in Newton at Wilson Chapel (lower level), 234 Herrick Road, Newton Centre. . Meetings always include Zen meditation (zazen) and Zen liturgy. On most Mondays there will also be either a dharma talk (lecture followed by a discussion), or the opportunity for individual meetings with a teacher (dokusan) as well as other special events. Check the calendar. You are invited to attend all or any portion of the activities—whatever works for your schedule and inclination. We sit 25-minute periods, and do a few minutes of walking meditation (kinhin) between periods. The evening starts formally at 7:30 pm and usually winds up between 9:00 and 9:30, though you are free to leave at any time.
If you are new to Zen:
Please send an email to let us know you are coming and then arrive at 7:00 pm for a brief orientation and our regular program. If you arrive late, please just come in anyhow and take a seat and dive in. An introductory book some have found helpful is John Daishin Buksbazen’s, Zen Meditation in Plain English.
